Students can get their creative juices flowing in our new sculpture club on Tuesdays. We welcome an exciting new chess teacher, Yoni Zimm, who is a very accomplished teacher and player.

Art and Painting

Styles Workshop

2 grade and up    Ilene Adams

Students will learn about master artists and gain an understanding of  different art movements. The class will combine a bit of art history with painting/drawing techniques. After looking at art works students will look at the world around them and find a scene that they would like to recreate in the style of the featured artist/movement.

Drama Kids Presents

Grade 1 and up    Melissa Jacobson

So you want to be in a show? Join drama kids and work on an onstage production of a Disney movie musical, either Aladdin or The Little Mermaid!  Everyone will have a part to play and a great time, as students collaborate together with Mrs. Jacobson to produce an awesome fully staged musical production!

tennisTennis I Beginner Junior Clinic

Grades 1-5     Dave Alston

The program is designed for kids ages 6 to10 with little or no tennis experience. Clinics consist of fed-ball drills to help kids learn the basic strokes of tennis, footwork drills and games utilizing the Quick Start Tennis format. Equipment provided.

Dress up, Makeup & Act Up!

Grades 1 and up    Melissa Jacobson

Rehearse and perform a different story every week. Make and dress up in costumes, create and put on our own makeup–including some really cool special effects makeup–and design and create props!  Play some great theater games and sing some awesome theater music in this great new club!

Students will work in clay, a medium that will allow them to discover the artist within. Professional artist Arline Linker will guide students in a wonderful creative experience. Clay and tools will be supplied.

Asaf Lubezky/Rosman Acosta/Jevaughn Suckoo

Designed to help students develop their soccer skills. Coachs Asaf, Rosman and Jevaughn will work on principles of offense & defense, fitness, and other soccer skills. Asaf Lubezky has been the assistant head soccer coach at the University of Hartford, director of the JCC soccer and sports program, and has played soccer in Israel, South Africa, Germany and Belgium. Rosman and Jevaughn are experienced travel team players and coaches.

NOTE Soccer starts at 4:00 and ends at 5:00 pm. From 3:30 to 4:00 pm students will attend homework center.

Rutman’s World Workshop

Grades 4-5 limited to 12    Sedra Rutman

Reading, vocabulary, word games and writing fun. Students listen to stories and poetry and create their own.

Arts & Crafts

Arts and Crafts

Kindgarten and up      Patti Kigner

Mrs. Kigner leads students to the world of craft as they proceed through a series of weekly projects that are theirs to take home. Students create beautiful craft items that will be cherished for years to come.

Students learn to express themselves through the creation of their craft item. But they also work on hand-eye coordination, learn patience, and the joy of following a task to the end. Enrollment is limited.

Advanced beginner junior clinic. The program is designed for kids ages 7 to 10 with some tennis experience. Kids in this program have the ability to hit forehands, backhands, volleys and play mini tennis points. Clinics consist of fed-ball drills to help improve proper stroke techniques and play points at a higher level. Fun is emphasized with the chance to grow your game. Equipment is provided.

Meyer Academy chess students have won many trophies

Chess Club

1-8 Grades    Yoni Zimm

NEW teacher and a new program for beginning and advanced players. Club members will work on chess strategy, basic chess moves, openings, chess notation, puzzles and game analysis. Chess develops students’ concentration, anticipation, helps with visualization of spatial relationships, and the development of strategy skills.The Chess Club was founded in 1995 by the late Carmine Nigro. Students learn the discipline and strategy of the royal game—the same lessons that Mr. Nigro taught 8 year-old Bobby Fischer in Brooklyn in 1951.

Many club participants compete in local and state tournaments as a part of the school's chess team, the Kool Kings. Each year the school sponsors a scholastic tournament. The Kool Kings team has amassed an impressive collection of trophies, and several Meyer Academy students have successfully competed in U.S. Chess Federation tournaments on the national level.

Señora Ina Rogriguez returns with her “Spanish in Action” program which uses hands-on materials, games, songs, puppets, dance and a variety of dynamic activities to help students develop and apply vocabulary and Spanish conversational skills. Students loved this class last year!

Flag FootballFlag Football

Kindergarten and up Ted Shapiro

Ted Shapiro, an experienced coach and PE teacher, will lead the flag football club in a variety of organized and structured activities that will help lay the foundation for a lasting love of the sport. It is an excellent way to prepare for elementary youth sports and organized league play.

While the club is open to students from K-8, participants will be divided into age appropriate groupings. Game FUNdamentals will be taught through individual and group instruction.

Friday Clubs & Workshops

Digital Photography

Workshop

4th grade & up - 10 Alan Crescas

Students will learn how to take photos using Nikon digital cameras, download the images into a laptop and manipulate those images in a software-based program. Students will print each week, cameras/software included in club fee. Students may not bring their own cameras to school-all equipment and materials are provided. A professional photographer, Mr. Crescas teaches photography at Suncoast HS.
